Where we Love to Stay

Located on the border of Botswana, close to the Kalahari Desert, Madikwe Game Reserve offers a malaria-free Big 5 safari experience unlike any other in South Africa. Although it is the fifth largest game reserve in the country, it is still relatively unknown, making it both a hidden gem for tourists and a valuable conservation area.

Jaci’s Lodges, Madikwe

While various accommodation options are available in the reserve, we believe there’s nowhere you get to experience the magic of Madikwe more vividly than during a stay at one of Jaci’s Lodges. If you’re looking for a classic ‘Out of Africa’ style stay, we highly recommend Jaci’s Safari Lodge. Here you can choose between two exclusive Starbed Suites, six luxury Tented Suites and two private Family Suites. At Jaci’s Tree Lodge, on the other hand, you will find eight fairy-tale-like treehouse suites, custom-built on wooden stilts and connected by raised walkways overlooking the Marico river. Doesn’t that just sound like the epitome of romance? What we love most about Jaci’s accommodation offerings is the exuberant mix of colour and custom fittings that characterise the interiors, adding a unique flavour to each suite, tent or treehouse.

Activities

Although it’s tempting to just spend the entire time enjoying your gorgeous accommodation, there are a range of unique safari-centred activities to enjoy during your stay – from exploring Madikwe Game Reserve on foot with an experienced guide to indulging your wildest wildlife photography fantasies with a tailored photographic experience. Apart from special outings such as these, all guests are treated to two daily guided game drives in an open safari vehicle – one at dawn and the other at dusk. While good sightings are never guaranteed in the bush, Jaci’s guides have a way of sniffing out the truly spectacular.

While the Big 5 may be top of mind for most guests, you would do well to keep your eyes peeled for some of the more elusive species, including: African wild dogs, cheetah, honey badger, bat-eared fox and aardwolf. Each of these drives also include a bush picnic stop, where you will be treated to coffee and biscuits/rusks in the morning and your choice of sundowners and snacks in the afternoons. While we’re all for the treats, the most special thing about these experiences is the thrill of being able to immerse yourself so fully in the vibrance of the bush as you step off the vehicle and into wild territory.

Conservation efforts

Keeping these spaces safe, wild and free is, of course, a big part of the Jaci’s Lodges ideology. With rhino horn being one of the most sought-after commodities in the world right now, these beautiful members of the Big 5 are under severe attack from poachers. So, in an effort to help conserve these creatures, Jaci’s Lodges have teamed up with a proactive anti-rhino-poaching organisation, www.stoprhinopoaching.com. They also assist the North West Parks and Tourism Board in various anti-poaching activities, from increased foot patrols and guard visibility on the ground to driving awareness campaigns among guests staying at lodges in Madikwe Game Reserve.

Sustainable tourism

Of course, conservation efforts are no good if they only concentrate on a single species. For this reason, Jaci’s Lodges are involved in a number of conservation and eco-friendly community projects. These include:

  • Community support and upliftment projects
  • Use of non-toxic cleaning products and amenities
  • Minimisation of waste by purchasing bulk amenities instead of individual packaging and products
  • Waste recycling through community operated collect-a-can project
  • Prioritisation of community employment at Jaci’s Lodges, with staff employment and delivery of products such as firewood sourced from the local community
  • Water conservation by greywater recycling and towel/linen re-use
  • The Madikwe Guest Conservation Contribution, which allows every visitor the opportunity to protect the reserve’s endangered animals

The team behind Jaci’s

Jaci and Jan van Heteren are the dynamic owner-manager couple behind Jaci’s Lodges. They work together in creating and sustaining a luxury wildlife and safari experience that surpasses guest expectations. Their partnership is a successful one based on trust, love and support. While Jan focuses on the cuisine, hospitality and financial side, Jaci’s passion is marketing and interiors. Additionally, Jan and Jaci are committed to empowering and uplifting the individuals who make the Jaci’s Lodges experience so special. The two lodges in Madikwe are run by a team of 50 people, most of whom – as mentioned above - live in the local community.

Each person who works at the lodges contributes to the daily running, management, maintenance and outstanding service that have made Jaci’s Lodges famous throughout the years. In an effort to make a tangible difference in the lives of each staff member, the Jaci’s Staff Trust was launched a few years ago. It offers people who have been employed at Jaci’s for more than five years the opportunity to become a shareholder in the business. A total of 27% of the business is currently owned by staff! The shareholding is held in a trust, and eligible staff members receive their portion of the dividends at the end of each year The impact is far-reaching, with the ultimate aim of empowering, uplifting and inspiring the local community.
